Sandra Wagstaff – Biography
Sandra’s early years were spent near the shores of Lake Ontario. This is where her love of art was formed, whether in drawings of the outdoors or sketches of her family and friends. She took art classes through the local “Y” and continued to pursue creative outlets through high school instruction. She experimented with such diverse forms as weaving, silk screening and basketry.
Sandra then took a long hiatus as university, career, a move to British Columbia, marriage and family took precedence. She will agree though that artistic expression never really left her. Whether it was creating Hallowe’en costumes or decorating birthday cakes for the children, she found ways to satisfy that need. She also took sporadic classes in painting ceramics and soapstone carving.
Her return to drawing and painting is really thanks to her sister Susan who invited her to come to a painting class when she was visiting Calgary. This was quickly followed by drawing classes through Surrey Parks & Leisure and several years of oil painting instruction from the very gifted Inoka Manori. In recent years, Sandra has also explored watercolours and acrylics but oil remains her preferred medium.
Sandra resides in Surrey, BC with her husband Wayne and delights in having their children and grandchildren nearby.
